About Us

Our History

Emi founded Rikyu in 2009 in Wembley, north west London. She started from scratch by hiring a small room in a fitness club, building up a loyal clientele and refining the Rikyu philosophy.

In 2012 she relocated the salon to its present location high above the city in leafy, tranquil Muswell Hill, refurbishing a period mews building in authentic Japanese style and expanding the range of treatments on offer.

Hugely popular in the local area, Rikyu also continues to bring in people from far and wide with our bespoke range. We have found that 8 out of 10 people who come to us return with positive feedback, so please get in touch to find your inner serenity and experience London’s best kept secret!

Our Philosophy

Our salon is named after the 15th century Japanese tea ceremony master ”Sen no Rikyu”. His vision was to incorporate the ancient Japanese aesthetic of “Wabi-Sabi” into the traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

Wabi-Sabi represents that true, authentic beauty appears through simplicity, modesty and tranquillity.

In the same way that he modified this conception towards his art, our philosophy at Rikyu is to bring out your elegance and serenity through our hospitality and simple yet high quality services.

Therapists at Rikyu

Haruka Makino

Foundation Science degree of Beauty and Spa Management

Becoming a beauty therapist who incorporates human anatomy and physiology was a case of fate for Haruka. She first became interested in this area while studying at dentistry college in Japan, and a keen interest in these subjects prompted a change in direction for her. After discontinuing her college studies she immediately enrolled in a prestigious hair dressing school. She received a Japanese National Hair Dresser Licence and also acquired various sought after qualifications within the beauty industry, including those for nails, make-up etc.

After coming to the UK, she studied Beauty and Spa Management at the London College of Fashion. Whilst studying there she received one award for massage and another for aromatherapy, which only one student is able to receive. While working at a 5-star hotel spa, she implemented high class treatments coupled with first class hospitality.

She is currently studying Herbal Medicine in a bid to introduce herbal treatments into health and beauty.
